Sight Seeing of Cochin Covers:

MATTANCHERY PALACE( DUTCH PALACE):

Built by the Portuguese in 1557 and presented to Raja Veera Kerala Varma of Cochin, The palace was renovated in 1663 by the Dutch.  On display here are beautiful nurals depicting scenes from the epics, Ramayana & Mahabharatha & some of the Puranic Hindu Legends.  The Palace also houses Dutch maps of old Cochin, coronation robes of former maharajas of Kochi.

JEWISH SYNAGOGUE:
Constructed in 1568, this is the oldest synagogue in the commonwealth.  Destroyed in a shelling during the Portuguese raid in 1662, it was rebuilt two years later by the Dutch.
Known for mid 18th century hand painted, willow patterned floor tiles from Canton in China,

a clock tower, Hebrew inscriptions on stone slabs, great scrolls of the Old Testament, ancient scripts on copper plates etc.
MUSEUM OF KERALA HISTORY:

Just 8Km. From Ernakulam, the Museum showcases historical episodes from the Neolithic to the modern era through life size figures.  Light and sound shows are regularly organized with commentaries in English and Malayalam.  There is also a gallery of paintings and sculptures, displaying over 200 original works by contemporary Indian Artists.  The center for
Visual Arts as a collection of the authentic reproduction of selected world masters and also larger-than-life mural reproductions of Indian Art.


With the Arabian sea on the west and a vast network of lakes, lagoons and fresh water rivers crisscrossing it, Alleppey is a district of immense natural beauty.  Referred to as the Venice of the East by travelers from across the world, this backwater country is also Home to diverse animal and bird life.  By virtye of its proximity to the sea, the town has always enjoyed a unique place in maritime history of Kerala.  Today Alappuzha is also famous for its Boat Races, Houseboat holidays, beaches marine products and coir industry.  A singular characteristic of this land is the region called “Kttanad”.

KUTTANAD:
Kuttanad, called the rice bowl of kerala, because of her wealth of paddy crops is at the very heart of the backwaters.  
The scenic countryside of Kuttanad with its shimmering waterways also has a rich crop of bananas, yarns and cassava which accompany the rice bowl as “side dished”.  This is one of the places in the world where farming is done below sea level.  Inland waterways that flow above land level are an amazing feature of this unique land.

PATHIRAMANAL
THE LAND OF MIGRATED BIRDS 
According to mythology a young Brahmin dived into the Vembanad Lake to perform his evening ablutions and the water made 
way for land to rise from below, thus creating the enchanting island of Pathiramanal (Sands of midnight). Pathiramanal located 14Kms from Alappuzha, this little island on the backwaters is favorite haunt of hundreds of rare migratory birds from different parts of the world.  The island is accessible only by boat.

BOAT RACES-THE TRADITIONAL SPORT OF KERALA:

The major festival of Kuttanadu is its splendid water regatta- the snake boat races.  They are held in connection with Onam, the State festival of Kerala.  Each snake boat is manned by over a hundred men who row in unison to the fast rhythm of the vanchi pattu (rowing songs).  The buoyant sprits of the participants get further revealed through their kuthu pattu (songs mocking men in rival boats).  The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is held on the 2nd Saturday of August every year.


Backwaters of Alleppey is an intricate network of innumerable lagoons, lakes, canals, Estuaries & the deltas of forty-four rivers that drain into the Arabian Sea. Over 900 kmof  this labyrinthine water world is navigable.
This largest backwaters stretch in Kerala is the Vembanad Lake, which flows through three district & open out to the sea at the Kochi Port.  The Ashtamudi lake (literally, having eight arms) which covers a major portion of  Kollam district in the south, is the second largest & is considered the gate way to the backwaters. 
Kettuvallam is a country boat that was used in the early days for the transport of goods from the isolated village to the towns with the advent of roads, bridges & ferry services.Gradually the kettuvallams went off the scene.  Now these kettuvallams are back again as a major tourist attraction.  A ride on a kettuvallam is a fabulous way to explore the fascinating beauty of backwaters.

A House Boat is about 67 feet in length & has a width of around 13 feet on the middle.  The materials that go into the making are all local & ecofriendly: bamboo poles, coconut fiber, ropes, bamboo mats, carpets etc…  The main wood used is “Anjili”.  There are houseboats with fully furnished Single room, Double room & Tripple Bedroom. All of them have sun deck, with comfortable chairs, kitchen & attached toilets (European Style). 
Traditional lanterns are used as lights.  The crew includes a chief & two oarsmen.  The cuisine is of traditional Kerala flavour along with the local specialties, delicious fish & prawns.  Western style cuisine is also available on prior request.  


There are Single Bedrooms houseboats for two people, Two Bedroom houseboat for four people, three bedroom houseboats for six people.  Another features are sundeck for sunbath.  There are Deluxe A/C Houseboats – One Bedroom & Two Bedroom.
The sail steered, wind powered boat that takes you along the enchanting paddy fields, picturesque river-banks and remote hamlets to provide a glimpses of Alleppey’s rural face.

Athirampally Waterfalls
:
It is a 800 foot high waterfall at the entrance of the Sholayar range and is a famous picnic spot for backpackers.
Palaruvi:
Palaruvi or ‘stream of milk’ is a 300-foot high waterfall in the Kollam district.
The wood near by is a famous picnic spot.


Konni Elephant Cage
: 
Konni is the gateway to the forest bordering the district.  In the past, wild elephant caught from the forests were brought here and put in wooden cages known as Anakoodu to be tames and trained for work.  Plans are afoot to develop a Safari park here.  It is situated 11kms away from Pathanamthitta.
